Stepped into the fifth country

August 6, 2014 - 18:09

We woke up in Hungary and will go to sleep in Serbia. In the mean time, we were rowing.

After the heavy storm last night, there still seemed to be a little shower in the morning, when the alarm went off at 6.30 am; although it could have been the sound of the water-drops landing on top of the tent. It was a gloomy day. We had a wet tent and our clothes were not dry either. The biggest issue was the tent; when packed wet, it can bin-burn and mould. Although we will make up the tent again this afternoon, I decided to pack the dry parts separate.

We launched the kayak by the port at Fadd-Dombor just a few minutes past 9, and then made our way towards Mohacs. An interesting looking boat passed by which we`ve seen the day before in the docks. We fixed the camera to the kayak hoping to quickly catch up with them and record the happening. We didn`t think the boat could have an engine. We just rowed and paddled, but could not get any closer. It took us about an hour to realize the boat is not manpowered. This was confirmed by Gaspar too, later in Baja.

Pretty soon after our start, we paddled under the Danube Bridge by Szekszard, and a few metres later we passed the entrance of the Sio channel. We planned on having our first break after 20 kilometres, but Gaspar checked in through the radio and told us he was waiting by Baja. He reached us on the CB, which meant we were within a 7-8 kilometres distance, therefore paddled a little further, but asked Gaspar a favour. So we could enjoy our superb lunch, a traditional meal made by the local Baja Inn, the turos csuszas harcsaporkolt (savoury cottage cheese with noodles and paprika catfish).

We continued our journey with a stuffed belly. We spotted a canoe team a little further, so we paddled closer to the left. Not soon after we caught up with them and chatted away a little. They were travelling from Paks to Mohacs, hoping to complete the approximately ninety kilometres journey in five days. We mutually wished a safe journey, and then continued our tour.

We found a good spot to stop just before Bar. We watched the pebbly-beaches changing into sandy-beaches and we stopped at one. The sandy-beach continued into a nice green space, and then you could see the beautiful trees. Tiny yellow flowers covered the ground, and a lot of basil. A lot.

Az Astrakhannal már legalább négyszer találkoztunk Budapest óta

Ate the sandwiches, chocolates and peaches, and then launched our kayak onto the water once more. But before, I have prepared the GoPro onto the paddle, let`s see what it captured:

Four people were waiting for us at Baja. Laci and his girlfriend brought Peti, who will take Attila`s place in the kayak from tomorrow. We stopped in front of the Fluvial Cross Border while Gaspar tried to get all the necessary information. We planned on crossing the boarders and stepping into Serbia by Hercegszanto on foot, therefore we had nothing to do. We got off by the ferry, about two kilometres further. We changed our clothes, placed the kayak on top of the car, waved goodbye to Attila and drove onto the ferry. We were prepared for a difficult customs inspection, as the lock on the boot broke down, it couldn`t be opened. Laci and his girlfriend brought the spare parts from Budapest, but we had no tools to fix it yet. We have already visualized the Serbian officer asking us to open the trunk and we would have to say it is broken. A few exchanges of words in Serbian, and another officer would be there in an instant, holding a hydraulic spreader to open the boot. Finally that`s not how it happened, it was enough just to look through the back window, and he asked us if we had anything to declare.

Passing the boarders we made our way towards a resort above Apatin. There were rich vegetations everywhere, and peach and plum trees covered with fruits. For a good few kilometres we were passing through single-lane streets, when finally next to a load we caught sight of the advertisement of the camping. We followed the arrow and not long after we turned into one of the most cosy camping so far. Beautiful grass, cute little terrace, a stage and lots of hens welcomed us with the host, who barely spoke any English.

The camping was empty, we were the only guests. We were wondering who comes to this recess, but we saw the Eurovelo 6 cycling route, and the owner told us, riders come by too. The sanitary places were simple, but civilized, and what is more we really liked the wooden floors layed across the pebbles. The shower was a simple OSB cabin, as was the toilet door, but behind it a tiled space welcomed us. The owner told us he lives in Apatin this is only a hobby. The children were running around the backyard too, and then the family got into their small Fiat, and drove home. Only the three of us stayed in the nicely lit camping. And the chicken.
